THIS IS HUGE: Neil Bush, the son of one Republican president and the brother of another, just announced he voted for Democrat James Talarico for U.S. Senate in Texas.

A Bush. Voting for the Democrat.

Neil Bush says he has never posted a political message on Facebook before, because he didn’t want to offend friends who see things differently. He broke that tradition to share that he voted early, and that he voted for Talarico over Republican Ken Paxton.

He said two things drove his vote: deep concern about Paxton’s record, and genuine admiration for Talarico’s character.

Bush said he’s been deeply troubled by Paxton’s effort to challenge the results of the 2020 election in other states to help keep Donald Trump in power, calling it an affront to democracy and the peaceful transfer of power. He also pointed out that Paxton was impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House.

Then he went further. He said Trump and those who enabled him have done enormous damage to the Republican Party, and warned about a culture where loyalty to one man comes before loyalty to principle.

But he made clear his vote was about more than opposing Paxton.

Bush said he’s never met Talarico, but has been impressed by the way he speaks with respect, seeks common ground and brings people together. He said Talarico’s faith seems to be a source of humility and compassion, not a political weapon.

And he summed it up simply: “character matters more than party affiliation.”

Think about that.

Neil Bush still lives in the same Houston neighborhood where his father lived for decades. He has been a Republican most of his life. And he looked at the choice in front of him and picked decency over loyalty to Trump.

When even the Bush family is crossing the aisle, it’s not about left or right anymore. It’s about right and wrong.
