Bill Clinton Mocks Trump’s Rose Garden Makeover as ‘Liberace’s Bathroom’ in Campaign Stop Jab

Former President Bill Clinton took sharp aim at Donald Trump’s extensive alterations to the White House grounds, quipping before a campaign audience that Congress erred by not formally intervening when the historic Rose Garden lawn was paved over in stone.

Appearing Tuesday in Hollywood, Florida, to stump for independent gubernatorial candidate David Jolly, Clinton zeroed in on the structural overhaul of the executive mansion’s most celebrated exterior space. Clinton told attendees that lawmakers should have raised formal objections when Trump transformed the storied grounds “into what looks like the entrance to Liberace’s bathroom.”

The quip gained wider circulation after Fox & Friends Weekend highlighted the remarks on-screen under the chyron: “Bill Clinton rips Trump’s treatment of White House.”

A Departure From a Six-Decade Landmark Layout

The controversial redesign represents the most dramatic physical overhaul of the Rose Garden since First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and landscape designer Rachel Lambert Mellon established its layout in 1962. For more than sixty years, that lush open lawn served as the stage for landmark bill signings, foreign dignitary welcomes, and presidential press briefings.

Under the recent renovation, the historic central green was excavated and replaced with stone pavers, creating a hardscape patio complete with yellow-and-white striped umbrellas. Observers, historians, and political critics quickly drew parallels between the new aesthetic and the outdoor pool and dining terraces at Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.

Trump has embraced the space’s new look, informally dubbing it the “Rose Garden Club” and debuting the terrace during a dinner hosted for approximately 100 Republican lawmakers and senior administration aides.

In a March interview on Fox News with host Laura Ingraham, Trump defended the hardscape redesign on practical grounds:

  • Drainage Improvements: Trump argued that outdoor events frequently left the original sod waterlogged and muddy following rainfall.

  • Footwear Practicality: He noted that solid pavers prevent female guests and dignitaries wearing high-heeled shoes from sinking into the lawn during formal gatherings.

  • Positive Feedback: He maintained that the updated patio design has received widespread acclaim from event attendees.

Clinton’s jab taps into broader concerns voiced by historic preservationists, who view the shift from Kennedy-era greenery to commercial resort-style stone pavers as a departure from the traditional decorum of the nation’s most historic public residence.
