Trump Demands Omar Resign From Congress After New Findings

President Donald Trump has called for the immediate resignation of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, claiming she used a false name when taking the oath of office in Congress. The escalating demands follow an October 12 federal search of Omar’s Washington, D.C. residence and an October 21 court filing by the U.S. Attorney’s Office that referenced an alternative surname.

Speaking at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, Trump asserted that Omar’s congressional status was compromised.

“It’s not looking good because she used a fake name to be sworn in,” Trump told the crowd. “I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress.”

Trump also pointed toward House Speaker Mike Johnson and claimed that Democrats had effectively conceded Omar’s seat—a characterization unsupported by any formal statements from Omar, Democratic leadership, or local election officials. The president reiterated his call the following day during an appearance in Fort Myers, Florida, and raised the prospect of prison time should immigration fraud be formally proven.

The Federal Filing and the Dispute Over Identity

The renewed controversy stems from an October 21 procedural motion submitted by Jeanine Ferris Pirro, the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. In the document, prosecutors sought an extension until November 9 to respond to unsealing requests filed by Judicial Watch and 14 news organizations seeking access to sealed materials related to the October 12 search.

In that filing, prosecutors identified the congresswoman as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The motion requested permission to submit supporting arguments under seal and did not outline the evidentiary basis for using the Elmi name, nor did it constitute a formal judicial finding of fraud or misrepresentation.

Omar’s office swiftly rejected claims that her public identity is fabricated.

“Ilhan Omar is her real name,” a spokesperson told Fox News Digital, pointing to her full legal name as Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.

Backstory and Legal Fallout

The name dispute revives long-standing allegations surrounding Omar’s past marriage to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Official records indicate the pair were legally married in Hennepin County, Minnesota, in 2009 and divorced in 2017. Conservative critics have long circulated claims alleging that Elmi was Omar’s brother—an assertion Omar has consistently denied as baseless, defamatory, and offensive.

The political dispute comes in the wake of the October 12 early-morning federal search of Omar’s D.C. residence. Omar’s legal counsel has formally contested the search, demanding the return of seized property while challenging the procedural execution and statutory grounds of the warrant. The Department of Justice has maintained that federal investigators acted in strict compliance with court authorizations and federal law.

Omar has framed the federal inquiry as politically motivated intimidation aimed at her reelection campaign, while Trump continues to feature the inquiry prominently at campaign rallies leading into the upcoming midterm elections.
