THIS IS AMAZING: Ireland just sent Donald Trump a message he won’t be able to forget. Protesters filled the streets with balloons, banners, and one enormous message written into the very ground beneath his flight path.
Read that again.
Trump landed in Ireland to visit his own golf resort in Doonbeg and meet with Irish leaders. What greeted him instead was outrage, in Doonbeg and across Dublin.
Crowds carried giant crude balloons depicting Trump. Journalist and author Justine McCarthy showed up to protest and didn’t hold back about why.
“We don’t want him here,” she said. “The reasons I’m protesting are first of all as a woman, because he’s a sex offender. Secondly, because of Palestine, America’s collusion in the onslaught on Gaza…and because of America’s unprovoked war on Iran… the third reason is climate change because he called climate change a hoax and he is damaging our planet.”
Irish academic and feminist Ailbhe Smyth said she felt an “ethical and moral responsibility” to show up. “We do not support you,” she told The Independent, adding that she wanted history to remember Ireland as a place that stood up to “this terrible man.”
And here’s the part that says the most.
Smyth noted that this wasn’t just the usual left-wing protest crowd. “It does bring really political parties from the center right over to right across the left together,” she said. “There is a general consensus… here in Ireland that is solidly 100% anti-Trump.”
A “No Kings” mural went up in Dublin days before he even landed. Siobhán O’Donoghue of the group behind it put it simply: “We just can’t capitulate to that narrative that people in Ireland somehow or another are backing Trump. All it takes is for good people to stay silent for an incorrect view to be drawn.”
And somewhere under his own flight path, one Irish resident carved a message into her land that needed no translation at all.
Ireland didn’t stay quiet. Left, right, and center, they showed up together and made sure the whole world saw it.
